Harp Lessons

Marina has been teaching students of all ages and levels since 2000. She is now part of the UNR and TMCC faculties in addition to operating a private harp studio.

Marina believes that in order to be a well-rounded musician, one needs to engage in a variety of practices. Actively performing as a soloist, a chamber musician, and being a member of the orchestra go hand in hand with sharing musical knowledge and passion by teaching.

To achieve a well-rounded musical education, students should ultimately experience a variety of musical aspects. In addition to harp playing techniques, students explore music theory, ear training, rhythm, and creativity as an inevitable part of the learning process. Practicing performance skills is also encouraged among students of all skill levels, as music is meant to be shared with others.

The earliest age to start harp lessons is typically five, the other extreme is unlimited. Indeed, it is never too late to accomplish your dreams. Previous musical experience is not required but could be helpful for quicker progress. The goal is to enjoy learning to play this gorgeous instrument.

FAQ

What are the lesson options?

Marina offers private harp lessons and teaches at TMCC and UNR. At UNR, students 18+ and eligible high schoolers can take harp lessons for credit and use the school harps for practice. TMCC offers a budget-friendly, non-credit summer group harp class for beginners. Contact Marina for details on lessons or group classes.

What is the best age to start?

Every student’s journey is unique. Marina believes the best time to start is when the student feels ready. Some begin as young as 3-4, others during school years, and many adults start as professionals, empty nesters, or later in life. TMCC’s beginner harp class welcomes adults in a fun, supportive group setting.

Do I need previous musical experience?

No musical experience is needed to learn the harp. Marina provides tailored music theory instruction to build a strong foundation. Chromatic tones, controlled by pedals or levers, make understanding scales and chords challenging at first. Prior piano training or basic theory is helpful but not required.

Do I need to have a harp?

Students must rent or own a suitable harp. Renting is easy, and Marina has instruments available. For pedal harps, she recommends Lyon & Healy, Salvi, and Camac. For lever harps, great options include Triplett, Thormahlen, Dusty, and Stoney End. Contact Marina for help finding the right harp for you.

What kinds of music do you teach?

Learning the harp is exciting at any age, and Marina’s goal is to make it enjoyable. Lessons are tailored to each student’s style—country, folk, rock, or classical. Fundamentals can be mastered just as well with Bach, the Beach Boys, or Metallica.
