A Beautiful Gift: Honoring Jaquelyn Coleman Through Music
February 2025 - Salvi McFall - North Valleys High School
This beautiful 38-string lever harp was generously donated by the family of the late Jaquelyn Coleman after learning about the need for a new harp at North Valleys High School in Reno. To ensure the instrument was in top condition, professional harpist Marina Roznitovsky Oster restrung and regulated the harp. Special thanks to Sarah Crane for transporting the harp from Sacramento to Reno. Now, Alice, a dedicated young musician, enjoys playing this cherished harp in the North Valleys High School Orchestra and other ensembles.
Here is this harp's story as told by Jacquelyn's granddaughter, Jocelynn:
"For Jacquelyn Coleman, music was never about performance or prestige—it was about feeling. She didn’t grow up with a harp in the family, nor was she pushed into playing one. Instead, she chose it for herself, drawn in by its graceful shape and the way its strings could fill a room with warmth.
She played simply for the joy of it. The harp was her retreat, a place where she could lose herself in melodies that drifted like whispers through the air. There were no rigid schedules, no expectations—just her fingers plucking at strings, weaving harmonies for no one but herself and those lucky enough to listen.
Jacquelyn’s love for the harp wasn’t about technique or formal training; it was about connection. Every note she played was a reflection of her heart, a quiet expression of the beauty she found in sound. And though time may pass, that love remains, echoing softly in the memories of those who heard her play."
Thanks to this generous harp donation and the support of our community, students at North Valleys High School can continue their musical journey. This instrument now carries the echoes of kindness, uniting past and present through the power of music education.
Donation by Marina Roznitovsky Oster
September 2017 - Aoyama 140A - North Valleys High School
Marina donated a 1969 Aoyama lever harp to North Valleys High School after learning that the orchestra teacher was eager to include a harpist in the ensemble. Though the harp required extensive repairs—particularly to its levers—after months of restoration, it was ready to serve the students once more.
For years, this beloved instrument enriched the school’s music program, until its final moment in December 2024. In a dramatic farewell, the harp's body cracked and separated from its base with a sound like an explosion—a fitting last "hoorah" for an instrument that had given so much to music education.
